Fall into Fashion

by January Papas

Fall in the desert is unique in that the temperature is still quite warm during the day with a definite cooling towards the evening. The trends this year are absolutely do-able in the desert with minor adjustments. The top trends for fall include a romantic white top, tights, skinny jeans, oversized sweaters and wide belts. The fall color palate is black, white, gray and red.

White has always been a style staple and this season is no different. A crisp and romantic blouse is the way to go this fall. The latest offerings are more unique and chic than ever.

Look for delicate pin tucking, embroidery, insets of lace and eyelet detailing. For those with a fear of frills, there are plenty of fuss-free options as well.

Whether you go monochromatic or mix it with black or color, you'll get more wear out of this item than any other this season. This season's white blouse is crisp yet feminine, airy yet structured.

The whimsical nature of this top is perfect for strolling along Palm Canyon Drive on Thursday night’s Street Fair in Palm Springs.

My favorite trend this fall is tights / leggings. Designers hit the runways this year with leggings abound. It is seen under everything from skirts to dresses or paired with a jacket as the “new suit”.

The trendiest look this fall is to pair leggings in place of pants with a jacket or oversized sweater. When wearing a tight and fitted bottom you will want to always pair it with a larger, more oversized top.

Leggings are also great under a mini skirt or shorts paired with a cropped jacket for a more polished look that can be worn straight from the office to cocktail hour at Acqua Pazza in Rancho Mirage.

The skinny jean has replaced the wide-leg and boot cut styles we are all use to. Similar to the legging trend, skinny jeans can be paired with the oversized knit sweaters or jackets once winter settles on the desert.

Until then, pair the skinny jean with a white flowing top and pair of heels for dinner at
Villa Abbate Ristorante Italiano in Rancho Mirage or a night of dancing at Red 74.

If there was one look that almost every designer showed, it was the wide belt -- usually in black -- at the waist of everything from coats to suits to dresses. The great thing about this look is that all you need to do to update any outfit is to add a black belt to the waist.

The serious, dark color story is a nice change of direction after seasons of pink, turquoise and bright metallics. It's a more grown-up approach to fashion and signals a turn to a sexier, more powerful look for woman.
